Honeypot's Volunteer Hero - John Lay-Flurrie

John Lay-Flurrie from New Milton, has received a Girdler’s Medallion for his amazing 8 years of volunteering for Honeypot. John is never “off duty” and always telling everyone of Honeypot’s services! Previously, Honeypot & young carers issues were unknown in John’s area. Now, thanks to John, support has risen dramatically, with John directly and indirectly raising over £15,000!

John volunteers in numerous ways from local community group and schools talks, to acting as Santa, he even runs quizzes! He has also entertained the young carers on their annual weekend respite breaks with his puppet shows.

” I have seen many changes in my life, but Honeypot has changed the lives of so many young carers. Honeypot changes to meet the new circumstances young carers face. The award has left me with wonderful memories and the people we met, that I will take with me to my next Honeypot adventure…with the medal of course.”

We know there are lots of amazing people across the UK who give their time and energy to help others, but John really stands out as a local hero. He never asks for thanks or recognition!

The Honeypot Children’s Charity has been supported by The Girdlers’ Company for more than 25 years. The Girdlers’ Company is one of the 110 Livery Companies of the City of London. It was involved in the making of girdles (or belts), and received its Letter Patent from Edward III in 1327. It no longer practises its craft however it has the honour of presenting the girdle and stole worn by the sovereign at each coronation, most recently to King Charles III. It is now an organisation with charitable objectives founded on the shared values of stewardship, benefaction, personal engagement and fellowship.

Honeypot was asked to nominate a volunteer to receive a Girdlers’ Medallion at their annual Prizegiving Evening held in Girdlers’ Hall in London in May. It was an easy decision to nominate John Lay-Flurrie from New Milton who has been a volunteer ambassador with Honeypot for 8 years.

We have many volunteering opportunities from fundraising activities and events (as John does) to helping on respite breaks. You can help the children enjoy taking part in go karting, den building, baking, arts and crafts, theatre productions or helping prepare dinner. Get in touch now!
