Elsie's story

Elsie is a creative, music-loving young carer with a big heart and even bigger dreams. She lives at home with her mum Becky, dad Ash, little brother Leo, and their cat Monty. She’s a young carer who plays a vital role in her family’s daily life - especially when it comes to supporting her mum, who lives with functional neurological disorder, fibromyalgia, and chronic migraines.

“Because of our circumstances, we perhaps don’t get to do as much as other families. Going out and about can be quite difficult.” Mum, Becky

Becky’s right leg sometimes stops working without warning, causing her to fall. Elsie has been there to help lift her up. She also supports her mum through episodes of reactive hypoglycaemia, when her blood sugar drops suddenly. In those moments, Elsie instinctively brings her a sugary drink, helps her to the sofa or bed, and offers comfort with a wet paper towel, a cuddly teddy, and a blanket.

After Leo was born, mum Becky went through a difficult emotional period. Elsie was the one who helped her through it, lifting her spirits and helping make bottles for her baby brother. Emotional support is at the heart of Elsie’s caring role.

“When I had Leo I had severe postnatal depression and Elsie was the only one that pulled me out of it emotionally.” Mum, Becky

While her dad Ash is Becky’s registered carer, Elsie often steps in to care for her brother Leo when dad is supporting Becky. Her daily routine is full of responsibility. making breakfast for herself and Leo, tidying up after school, taking out the rubbish, and helping Leo to shower and get ready for bed. She also helps prepare his lunch for the next day.

Elsie is proud to help her family, especially when it comes to making Leo’s sandwiches, but she admits it can be frustrating at times, and her responsibilities have an emotional impact.

Despite the challenges, Elsie is full of life. She loves reading, especially stories about goblins and aliens, and recently completed a reading challenge to raise money for Honeypot. She’s passionate about art, swimming, and rock music, and has even seen McFly and Black Veil Brides live. Her dream? To become a tattoo artist or a rock star. She’s already in a band and sings at school!

Elsie was referred to Honeypot by her previous school’s pastoral care team – a turning point that opened the door to new experiences and support. She’s now been on two Respite Breaks at Honeypot Hampshire. Nervous at first, she quickly found joy in the freedom, fun, and friendship, from slip 'n’ slides and BBQs, to creating a full-table masterpiece in the art studio.

When it came to mealtimes, Elsie received full support for her vegan diet and dairy allergy during her stay. Chris, our Children’s Services Leader, made sure every meal was safe, delicious, and tailored just for her. Elsie absolutely loved the food and Chris’s thoughtful approach made a big impact on her Honeypot experience.

One of Elsie’s favourite moments? Riding a bike safely and confidently, something that’s hard to do at home. At Honeypot, she can ride freely, knowing staff are there to support her. Even when she’s not at Honeypot, Elsie stays connected through birthday cards and Christmas packs – small gestures that remind her she’s seen and supported.

Elsie’s story is a powerful reminder of the resilience, creativity, and compassion young carers bring to their families, and how important it is to give them space to grow, dream, and just be kids.
