Honeypot works with young carers and children aged 5-12 facing difficult circumstances. While the majority of children we support are young carers, we also support children in a non-caring role who are dealing with challenges. such as loss, instability, low confidence, bullying, or problems at school.
Young carers are children who provide care and emotional support to a family member who is ill, disabled, or suffers from a mental health condition or substance abuse. We are the only charity in the UK that is solely dedicated to supporting young carers in the 5-12 age range.
Having to adopt a surrogate adult role at home, alongside homework and school, is unbelievably tough. Some of our children are as young as five when they start helping to give medication, complete household chores and assist with personal care. Although still children, some of them care for up to 50 hours a week, 365 days a year, and often single-handed.
Whether a child is a young carer, or facing other challenges, the resulting stress can have a significant impact on their physical and mental wellbeing, including high rates of anxiety, depression, and social isolation. They can find it difficult to make friends, struggle to achieve at school, have low confidence and self-esteem, or are bullied due to their circumstances.
Our early intervention wraparound service is designed to provide relief, build resilience and develop social confidence, in a safe and nurturing environment. Each year, we support over 3,000 children through residential breaks and a range of services to meet their changing needs.
