New Film - Jaiden's Story
11 March 2026
On Wednesday 11 March, Carers Trust marks Young Carers Action Day 2026, shining a spotlight on the theme Fair Futures for Young Carers.
Across the UK, thousands of young carers take on adult responsibilities far too early - providing practical and emotional care to family members while trying to keep up with school, friendships and their own wellbeing. Research shows that many struggle emotionally under the weight of these responsibilities, and too often their futures can feel limited before they have even begun.
At Honeypot, we believe every young carer deserves the same opportunities as their peers - to learn, grow, discover their talents and dream big. We hear time and time again from the many young carers we support about their dreams for a bright future.
This Young Carers Action Day, we are proud to launch Jaiden’s Story - a powerful new film sharing the journey of just one of our very special alumni.
Jaiden first came to Honeypot as a young carer, carrying responsibilities at home that many adults would find overwhelming. Like many young carers, he was anxious, unsure of himself and struggling to see what his future might hold.
Through residential breaks, ongoing outreach and emotional support, Honeypot gave Jaiden something every child deserves: space to breathe, to build confidence and to be recognised, not for what he carried, but for who he was.
Today, Jaiden is studying drama at the University of Bath - pursuing a passion and building a future he once struggled to imagine.
Jaiden’s story is a powerful reminder that when young carers are given the right support at the right time, their potential is limitless. In his own words, Honeypot didn’t just give him a break - it gave him belief. Watch the film below.
“I think Honeypot has played a vital role within my life as a young carer. Creating an escape for me as a child, being a support system for me as a teenager – I was able to chase my dreams without worrying about my mum and now I know that at Uni, I’m going to be okay. I feel secure within myself and I know that Honeypot’s got my back.” Jaiden | Honeypot alumnus
The theme of this year’s Young Carers Action Day - Fair Futures for Young Carers - recognises a simple truth: young carers often start from a different place to their non-caring peers. Caring responsibilities can impact:
Emotional wellbeing
School attendance and concentration
Confidence and self-belief
Career aspirations
Access to enrichment opportunities
Without intervention, these early pressures can shape long-term outcomes in education, employment and health. Honeypot is working to help level that playing field. Our residential breaks and wrap-around support give young carers the chance to:
Reduce anxiety and stress
Build friendships and social confidence
Try new activities and discover new strengths
Develop confidence, resilience and independence
We know from our impact data that, after a Honeypot break, positive emotions increase significantly, while anxiety and low mood decrease - laying foundations that stretch far beyond a few days away. For many alumni, including Jaiden, Honeypot becomes the turning point between simply coping and truly thriving.
Supporting young carers is not only about providing immediate relief - it is about shaping brighter futures. Many of our alumni speak about how Honeypot helped them. By building self-belief early, we help children to expand their sense of what is possible. They can:
Feel confident speaking in front of others
Believe they could succeed academically
Go forward in further education
Pursue careers they once thought were out of reach
Help others around them
“If you’re caring for someone all the time, you might not get the chance to learn how to make friends or even have conversations. Honeypot gave me those building blocks. I think the empathy that being at Honeypot gave me is something I’ve carried through life.” Jack | Honeypot alumnus
While Young Carers Action Day rightly focuses on young carers, we recognise that many children experience additional pressures that affect their wellbeing and confidence. Our Health & Wellbeing Breaks provide structured residential support for small groups of children who need help to strengthen confidence, emotional regulation and social connection.
This includes young carers and other children navigating significant challenges. Delivered through carefully designed residential experiences, the programme combines shared activity, reflection and positive challenge to build resilience and self-belief.
Young carers’ experiences are increasingly recognised at national level, yet many still remain hidden in classrooms and communities across the UK. Research consistently shows that young carers are more likely to struggle emotionally, miss out on educational opportunities and feel disadvantaged compared to their peers.
Ensuring fair access to opportunity requires coordinated action - from schools, local authorities, health services and national policymakers - to recognise young carers early, provide meaningful respite and ensure their educational and career aspirations are not constrained by circumstance.
Young Carers Action Day is a moment to recognise the hidden pressures young carers face - but it is also a moment to celebrate their strength, ambition and resilience. With the right support, young carers do not just cope. they flourish. As Jaiden’s story shows, a brighter future is not a distant dream - it is something we can build together.
