From Carpentry to Community: Derrick Young’s Volunteering Journey
Derrick Young, a retired carpenter and joiner, has found a new calling in later life. Residing in the picturesque New Forest, Hampshire, Derrick decided to dedicate his newfound free time to a cause close to his heart by volunteering at Honeypot. A typical day involves diverse activities, often utilising his carpentry skills to enhance and bring a bit of colour and joy to the charity's grounds. As well as working on a range of practical projects, Derrick also supports on fundraising and can sometimes be found manning a stall to raise money and awareness of the charity.
Derrick’s journey into volunteering began at a local volunteer fair in Lyndhurst, where he met our Community Engagement Manager Viv Carter whose passion for what we do really inspired him to join The Honeypot Children’s Charity.
Motivation to volunteer with Honeypot
Derrick was also deeply moved by the concept of supporting young carers aged 5 to 12 who take on adult responsibilities at a very young age.
"We're talking young children from 5 to 12, becoming carers, not being able to play when they want to play, or join after school activities because they need to get home and administer help to their parents or siblings," Derrick explained.
The decision to volunteer with Honeypot was easy for him, as he felt a strong connection to the charity's mission and was truly inspired by the enthusiasm of the team at the charity.
Memorable experiences at Honeypot
When asked what he enjoys most about volunteering at Honeypot, Derrick emphasised the great satisfaction he comes away with.
He said, “Most of us want satisfaction in life or what's the point?
“You know, you have to have something that makes each day different and, and I think that's volunteering.
“And yes, you do get massive reward – it’s not a selfless act, it's very, very rewarding.”
One of Derrick 's most poignant memories is visiting Honeypot House during the COVID-19 lockdown when the children were not there.
"It was really sad.
“It made me realise, that the actual seven acres of lovely grounds without the children, it's just nothing," he recalled.
Now, seeing the children back and enjoying the space brings him immense joy.
Skills and personal growth
Through his volunteer work, Derrick has gained a new perspective.
He said, "What has changed for me, is thinking differently.
“Asking: How would a child do this? What would they like to see?”
Volunteering with The Honeypot Children’s Charity has opened Derrick's eyes to the significant number of young carers and their needs.
"The more carers there are, the more it costs to meet their needs and keep the charity going.
“[Support] has to be continuous," he emphasised.
Advice for aspiring volunteers
Balancing volunteer work with other commitments is crucial for Derrick. Despite a busy schedule, Derrick manages to juggle volunteer work with his various activities, whether it’s cycling, playing tennis, spending time with family or doing projects for himself.
He said: “I think the important thing, for anyone thinking about volunteering, is that they don't feel like they've got to commit an enormous amount of powers, every little bit helps.
“Most charities, certainly Honeypot, they're very grateful.”
Derrick encourages anyone considering volunteering with The Honeypot Children’s Charity to take the plunge.
"It's a wonderful charity!
“What Honeypot does, it really makes a difference," he said.
Derrick's story is a testament to the power of volunteering and the positive impact it can have on both the giver and the receiver. His commitment is driven by the rewarding nature of the work and the positive impact on the children.
Derrick’s dedication to The Honeypot Children’s Charity continues to make a meaningful difference in the lives of young carers in the New Forest.
