Press Release: The Honeypot Children’s Charity Awarded £20,132 from The Health Lottery Foundation to Support Welsh Young Carers

Powys, Wales 9 October 2025 – The Honeypot Children’s Charity is thrilled to announce it has been awarded £20,132 from The Health Lottery Foundation, following a highly competitive selection process that saw 2,400 applications and just 45 charities chosen nationwide.

This vital funding will provide 41 young carers aged 5–12 with the opportunity to enjoy a 3-day residential respite break at Honeypot’s Pen y Bryn house in Wales, located in beautiful rural Powys. These breaks offer children a chance to rest, play, and simply be children away from the pressures of their caring responsibilities.

“We are absolutely delighted to have been awarded a grant from The Health Lottery Foundation. Their support reaffirms the importance of looking after the mental health of young carers, which deserves more attention. There are an estimated 1 million young carers nationwide who desperately need support. They often experience high levels of anxiety, severe social isolation and many fall behind in school due to the pressure of their caring responsibilities at home.

In addition, the families that we support are very often financially disadvantaged. The continuous wrap-around service that The Honeypot Children’s Charity offers enables young carers to enjoy a much-needed break, to access tailored support and to ensure they are making happy memories and building brighter futures.”
— Simmi Woodwal, CEO

Honeypot has been supporting young carers and vulnerable children for almost 30 years, offering respite breaks, wellbeing services, and ongoing emotional support to help them build resilience and confidence.

The Health Lottery Foundation funds projects that address health inequalities and promote wellbeing. This grant reflects their commitment to improving the lives of young people and ensuring every child has the opportunity to thrive. The Health Lottery Foundation’s commitment to supporting young people was so strong that in response to the overwhelming demand, they increased their original funding pot from £500,000 to £751,000, allowing even more vital projects like Honeypot’s to receive support.

About The Honeypot Children’s Charity

For almost 30 years, we have been working to enhance the lives of young carers, giving them an opportunity to create happy childhood memories and build brighter futures. We support young carers in England, Wales and Scotland, with an early intervention programme designed to alleviate social isolation, reduce stress and anxiety, build confidence, and reverse educational underachievement. Each year, we aim to offer places to over 3,000 young carers and vulnerable children across the UK through residential breaks, and a wide range of services to meet the changing needs of young carers. We are the only UK charity to provide this consistent, tailored, level of support for young carers in the 5-12 age range.
